How to Incorporate Social and Emotional Learning into School Curriculum

Bringing a full Social and Emotional Learning curriculum into schools is difficult because of the stress teachers are under, however, many children need help building their social and emotional skills. Here’s how to incorporate SEL into everyday classroom curriculums without making it one more thing to add to an already huge workload.


English/Language Arts:

  • Reading and discussing literature that explores themes of empathy, emotional intelligence, and character development.

  • Incorporating journaling or reflective writing activities that promote self-awareness and self-expression.

  • Engaging in class discussions that encourage active listening, respectful communication, and perspective-taking.

Math:

  • Utilizing cooperative learning strategies that promote teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication during problem-solving activities.

  • Incorporating real-life scenarios that require responsible decision-making and critical thinking skills.

Science:

  • Encouraging students to work collaboratively in lab settings, fostering teamwork, and developing effective communication and relationship skills.

  • Analyzing the ethical considerations and implications of scientific advancements, promoting responsible decision-making.

  • Exploring the interdependence and interconnectedness of ecosystems, fostering social awareness and empathy toward the environment.

Social Studies/History:

  • Investigating historical events through multiple perspectives to foster empathy, understanding, and cultural awareness.

  • Analyzing the consequences of discrimination, prejudice, and social injustice to promote social awareness and responsible decision-making.

  • Engaging in class debates or discussions on contemporary societal issues, encouraging respectful dialogue and perspective-taking.

Physical Education:

  • Emphasizing sportsmanship, empathy, and fairness in competitive sports and physical activities.

Foreign Languages:

  • Incorporating activities that encourage empathy, cultural understanding, and respect for diverse perspectives.

  • Engaging in dialogues or role-plays that require active listening, effective communication, and understanding of non-verbal cues.

  • Exploring literature, songs, or films from different cultures to foster social awareness and appreciation for diversity.



These examples demonstrate how SEL can be integrated into various subjects, creating opportunities for students to develop social and emotional competencies alongside their academic learning.
